Start with a tune up and go from there. It is not likely your oil pump. They hardly every go out. When you are idling real, Real low it is normal for the oil light to come on. (just like before you actually start the car) It may be that the oil is too thin or too low, or that the rest of the engine is so worn that there is low oil presure. Get is so it idles well and look after the oil, but I do not think it is the pump. There could be something blocking the oil galleys preventing oil from returning to the crank case. There is also the chance that you are running a quart of more low on oil. It the car has been used for a lot of short drives, sludge build up could be preventing oil flow. So check the oil level, and if is OK, the pull the valve cover and clean the oil return galley. Infiniti . How to Change The Master Cylinder on a 1988 Ford RangerThe 1988 model Ford Ranger pick up truck has disc brakes on the front wheels and drum brakes on the rear wheels. The emergency brake pedal is connected to the rear brake system by a cable. The master cylinder uses brake fluid to create fluid pressure in the front and rear brakes; this component needs to be repaired when the brake pedal starts going to the floor or loss of fluid is found around the seal of the master cylinder. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Wheel chocks Standard and metric wrench sets Extra brake fluid Shop rags Safety glassesSuggest EditsItem AddWhy is it necessary?Done Step by Step : 1 Park the truck on a flat level surface and chock the front or rear wheels. Raise the hood. The master cylinder is located on the right corner of the firewall. 2 Remove the brake lines from the master cylinder. Remove the nuts from the master cylinder, and slide the master cylinder off the brake booster. 3 Place the new master cylinder on a table or work surface and remove the filler cap. Fill it with brake fluid and screw in the bleeder caps. To bleed the cylinder, press the piston in ¼ of the way, until you see fluid come out of the bleeder. 4 Install the master cylinder on the brake booster and secure it in place with the nuts from the old cylinder. Reinstall both brake lines, being careful not to cross-thread the lines. 5 Have the second person push the brake pedal to the floor and hold it. Place the wrench on the lines coming from the master cylinder and quickly crack the lines. Cracking a line means to close the line back as fast as you loosen it. Do this for both lines. 6 Have the helper turn the right front wheel all the way to the right. Place a 5/8-inch wrench onto the bleeder valve. The bleeder valve looks like a screw cap, mounted on top of the front caliper. Have your helper pump the brake pedal and hold it. Crack the bleeder and close it. Continue doing this until you have a steady stream of fluid coming out of the bleeder. Repeat the above steps for all four wheels, checking the fluid level in the master cylinder after bleeding each wheel. The connector will lock once pushed far enough. 6 Fill the master cylinder with DOT 3 brake fluid. Do not fill past the line on the side of the master cylinder. Push the cover back onto the master cylinder. Bleeding the Brakes Step by Step : 1 Locate the bleeder valve on the back passenger-side wheel. The valve will look like a nozzle, found above the brake assembly. Place a piece of rubber or plastic tubing over the bleeder valve. Ensure the other end is inserted into a drain pan. This will prevent the brake fluid from spilling on the ground. 2 Instruct an assistant to sit in the driver's seat and start the truck. They will be required to press the brake pedal to bleed the brakes. 3 Turn the bleeder valve counterclockwise to open the valve. The valve only needs to be turned half a turn to open. Once the valve is open, instruct the assistant to press the brake pedal repeatedly until brake fluid pours from the valve. Close the valve once clean fluid comes from the nozzle. Repeat this step once more to ensure the air is drained from the brake lines. Repeat this process on all wheels. Ensure the master cylinder does not go dry.
